About Us

ArchitEXE is a practice based in Topsham, Exeter, Devon

The sole practitioner, Thomas Shillitoe, is an Architectural Technologist who has excellent planning, design and construction knowledge as well as a keen interest in the latest developments in sustainable technologies. He provides informed honest and realistic advice together with a comprehensive first class drawing service.

Thomas has many years experience working in the residential sector, having worked for busy private practices across the South West. These practices still employ Thomas's services on a contractural basis, demonstrating the value of his skills. Thomas is currently working on projects in Devon, Cornwall, Wiltshire and Hampshire for planning consultants such as Washbourne Greenwood Development Planning and York Associates.

Thomas now works from a home office, thereby keeping overheads down and passing these savings onto clients.

What is the difference between an Architectural Technologist and an Architect?

An Architectural Technologist provides architectural design services and solutions. They are specialists in the science of architecture, building design and construction and form the link between concept and construction. As professionals adhering to a Code of Conduct, they are required to obtain and maintain mandatory Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) if providing services directly to clients.

Definition of an architect by RIBA: Architectural education and training focuses on the integration and synthesis of all aspects of design and construction in response to a client's brief, both for individual buildings, groups of buildings and spaces in between. A person described as an architect must, by law be registered with the Architect's Registration Board.

Planning and Building Regulations legislation is constantly changing and we ensure we are up to date with the latest releases, so that applications submitted are accurate and conform to the current standards. We are familar with all the latest Code for Sustainable Homes legislation and the sustainable technology that now forms an integrated part of any project from extensions to new housing developments.

ArchitEXE use a CAD system ensuring quality drawings can be produced cost effectively. We are often praised on the clarity and presentation of our drawings and documentation.

Environmental Performance

ArchitEXE strives to acheive good environmental practices

Transport

Thomas Shillitoe, the sole practitioner works from a home office, ensuring no environmental impact for commuting to his place of work. For site visits, he will walk or cycle where practically possible. If the site is near to a railway station he will take the train from Topsham station. If non of the above options are practically possible, he will drive. This is the least preferable option and so is combined with other required visits where possible.

Office Supplies & Waste

ArchitEXE requires paper and ink for printing, envelopes for posting and pens for sketching and writing. We aim to source all products as locally and sustainably as practically possible. As much waste is recycled as is practically possible.

Energy usage

The home office has energy efficient lighting and the computer has a energy saving socket so that when the main desktop computer is shut down, all peripheral hardware (printers etc) are automatically isolated rather than remaining on standby.

Electronic Mail and Online Submissions

Since 2008, all planning applications have been submitted online, greatly reducing paper and ink use, as well as removing the environmental impact of posting printed applications. Correspondence is by e-mail where deemed sufficient.

ArchitEXE is continually reviewing its policies in order to become a 'greener' company.
